ABOUT TRANS BAY CABLE

Powering Pittsburg, CA and San Francisco, CA

In September 2005, after a lengthy stakeholder process, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) selected the Trans Bay Cable (TBC) Project as the best energy transmission solution to provide reliable energy to the City of San Francisco.

TBC consist of a HVDC submarine cable system that runs 53-miles under the San Francisco Bay to transfer existing energy from the City of Pittsburg to the City of San Francisco.

HVDC transmission lines were first installed in 1954 and have since been used all over the world. A few locations include lines that run from North Dakota to Minnesota, Canada to New Hampshire, Utah to California, Sweden to Germany, Australia to Tasmania, Italy to Greece, England to Ireland, and Norway to Denmark. Some are submarine installations like the Trans Bay Cable Project.
